Before the PopCanon reunion show, we did something a little crazy–we made vinyl records for our two main albums D’art and The Kingdom of Idiot Rock.
Both of these albums, of course, were recorded in the late 1990s. At the time, vinyl was still waning in popularity, and CDs were king. Some indie and punk rock labels were springing for vinyl, particularly 45s, but for us, it never seemed worth the expense. Instead, we invested in things like cusom pogs and PopCanon-branded pencils and spatulas.

But a British company called Elasticstage has recently made small-batch vinyl more affordable to create. I’ve been using them for my current band The Compartments. One afternoon, about six weeks before the show, I pitched the idea to the band, and over the course of about 48 hours, we created these records.
D’art ran slightly longer than the vinyl would allow, so we omitted one song–“Owed to a Weasel.” Of course, you can still hear that song on the streaming services, but we had to make some sacrifices. On the other hand, we expanded the original 4-page booklet to a stunning 10 pages.
Kingdom also would have been long, but by at least two songs. So we made the decision to expand it to two volumes with the second volume including all the tracks from our EP PopCanon Covers It Up, as well as our cover of “Synchronicity II.”
